St. Anthony School

We had a very successful assembly and two workshops with the 7th and 8th grade at St. Anthony school today! Thank you Carolyn, Brooke, Brittany, Bianca, and Claire for coming. You were a huge help, and the kids loved you!

Hey all!
Friday at St. Anthony's was my first volunteer experience and I was so touched by the kids and how much they looked up to Jon and the other group leaders!
One of the great ideas Britney had was to spend a minute or two in the small groups having the kids give affirmations to each other so they would be reminded of the positive qualities of their peers and maybe remember those things later on when faced with a stressful situation. The exercise not only promoted positive relationships between the kids, but you could tell it really made them feel good about themselves too.
Thanks for a great overall experience last Friday :-)
Hope to see you all again soon.

hey everyone!

This friday was amazing at St. Anthony's! the kids were all really sweet, and it was cool to be able to share an experience like that with them. It was so evident how much they all looked up to John and really respected all that he was saying. I didn't really know what to expect in joining this club and going to these schools, but the response i saw from some of these kids truly was really inspiring to see.

I think John wanted us to talk a little about what we did when we broke up into our small groups... Ok well first of all, I am really bad at improvising, so as John was talking, I like planned out exactly what I was going to talk about with them ( i am lame, i know!)... but anyway, I thought it would be kinda cool to go around the circle and talk about what values each kid held, just like we did at our meeting. But i decided to try and take it one step further and after they each shared their values, i told them my definition for what I think values are. The idea, that values are qualities that you admire in others. We then went around the circle and as i pointed to each kid, the other kids each had to come up with something they valued in that person. I think it really made the kids feel good about themselves and made the small group feel a lot more positive rather than trying to talk about combating negative aspects that go on in the school, like teasing and bullying.

I think the coolest part about this excercise was something that John picked up on. Everyone replied with the same values that they saw in one another. They were all nice, they were all smart, and they were all fun to be around. So then we had to raise the question, then why do people tease one another if everyone gets along so well. I think it proved to be an interesting discussion for these kids, and for me as well!

Overall, I really enjoyed my experience with these kids! I definitely learned a lot, and I hope they did as well :) Can't wait for the next school!

see you all wednesday!
